Abstract
Introduction: oral diseases are multifactorial infectious lesions, generated by pathogenic bacteria that cause a cascade of inflammatory episodes that release cytokines, proteins and other mediators, the objective of our study is to evaluate the inhibitory effect of astaxanthin on MMP-9 and MMP-13 released by the macrophage in children with periodontal and carious diseases. Purpose: To show the effect of astaxanthin on the different roles of the macrophage. Materials and methods: Based on a descriptive cross-sectional study, conducted in different randomized settings, including 515 schoolchildren aged 12 to 15 years, blood was recovered from healthy donors with dental infections to differentiate monocytes into macrophages, treated with astaxanthin at gradual concentrations, and activated by LPS (Lipopolysaccharide), by performing several assays Results: Among 515 children, 77% have carious disease and 68.4% have periodontal disease. The viscosity of saliva is an important factor in the development of carious disease while poor oral hygiene is a risk factor for both diseases. AST treatment significantly decreased the rate of NO, iNOS, arginase activity, glucose production, as well as the rate of MMP-9 and MMP-13 released by the macrophage during the two lesions, Furthermore, the production levels of Ca, cholesterol, proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, TNFα decreased significantly in patients with and treated with astaxanthin compared to controls, for all comparisons ( p<0.0001). Conclusion: caries and periodontal disease are present with preoccupied rates that result in the need to establish preventive measures and the need for care for the young child, however the use of astaxanthin at a dose of 10 would seem very effective in inhibiting the action of MMP-9 and MMP-13 released by the macrophage during both lesions.
